Action Taken Against Mold

Following Superstorm Sandy, US Senator Charles Schumer has advocated for a bill that would provide federal funding for mold removal. Mayor Bloomberg announced on January 31, 2013 that Neighborhood Revitalization NYC, a $15 million program, would serve 2,000 homes with mold remediation. The program operates privately through funding from teh Mayor’s Fund for NYC, the American Red Cross, and Robin Hood Foundation. When left untreated, mold poses serious health concerns, such as respiratory, skin, eye, and throat irritation. Furthermore, for people with weak immune systems, there remains a serious risk of lung infection. There are reports that in extreme cases, cancer and long-term health problems can occur.
