Hurricane Sandy Charity Disbanded

The State Attorney General’s office and the Division of Consumer Affairs filed a complaint in February against John Sandberg and Christina Terraccino for their Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund (HSRF). The complaint accused Sandberg and Terraccino of funneling $13,000 of contributions into personal bank accounts and the charity “violated state charity law by falsely claiming the HSRF was a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and donations were tax deductible.” However, IRS databases list the charity as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Avoiding a trial, the parties reached a settlement agreement. The Star-Ledger reports that the charity’s website shall be shut down, and the remaining $334,000 shall be disbursed within five months to charities throughout New Jersey and New York.
